welcome to the chemical reaction of potassium iodide, hydrogen peroxide, and soap, folks. basically what happens is that oxygen atoms dissociate from the peroxide and form little pockets of air, a naturally occurring reaction, but in the presence of potassium iodide (a catalyst) is sped up many times over. the tube like structure is actually just a column of soap bubbles, and it smokes because of the speed at which the reaction occurs and the friction from the sides of the tubes. you can even light the foam on fire and watch the flame travel and glow since the bubbles are formed completely of oxygen.
